March 17Being Nobody
I'm nobody! Who are you? / Are you nobody, too? / Then there's a pair of us—don't tell! / They'd banish us, you know. // How dreary to be somebody! / How public, like a frog / To tell your name the livelong day / To an admiring bog!
Emily Dickinson—“I'm Nobody! Who are you?” (1891)
The chase to be nobody may seem like advice for the slacker, but it may be the most spiritually advanced advice I can give you.
Who defines what being a somebody is anyway?
Freedom in life is achieved by letting go of all the things that define you as a somebody.
This notion probably freaks out your ego a little because, after all, striving to achieve some sort of status is a lifelong obsession for most of us.
But the really cool thing about being no one is that it allows you to be anyone—think about the power of that for a bit.
