December 15The Math of Movement

The invigorating air did them both good, and much exercise worked wholesome changes in minds as well as bodies. They seemed to get clearer views of life and duty up there among the everlasting hills; the fresh winds blew away desponding doubts, delusive fancies, and moody mists; the warm spring sunshine brought out all sorts of aspiring ideas, tender hopes, and happy thoughts.

Louisa May Alcott—Little Women (1868)

You've probably heard that sitting at a desk in front of a computer screen for some odd eight or nine hours is worse for you than, say, running with scissors, among other things.

Funny thing about “life and duty up there among the everlasting hills” or the gym or the sidewalk—it replaces more time than it takes.

No one needs to be reminded of this; we just have to figure out how to make it a priority.

Try this: want to have an extra hour or two of productive work in your day? Take two 20-minute walks during your workday. It's a pretty simple math equation. (Dance parties count too.)

Challenge Question

  1. Where will you schedule your active breaks each day? Put them on your calendar.
