December 6Precision and Balance

The fruition of beauty is no chance of miss or hit—it is as inevitable as life—it is exact and plumb as gravitation. From the eyesight proceeds another eyesight, and from the hearing proceeds another hearing, and from the voice proceeds another voice, eternally curious of the harmony of things with mankind … This is the reason that about the proper expression of beauty there is precision and balance.

Walt Whitman—Preface to Leaves of Grass (1855)

We don't balance anything by trying. Everything balances itself, and something seemingly so imprecise as that then becomes precision and balance.

That's perhaps a more elegant way of saying, “Hang on, everything's gonna be all right.”

Trust that even though it just … may … not … feel … like it—the fruition of beauty is no chance of miss or hit. Remember, those challenges are little packages of goodness tipping the universe back your way. Growing pains, let's call them that. Chaos before the storm. (Have faith.)

Today, express your beauty, that's your only job, be an expression of your vision.

Challenge Question

  1. What does balance feel like to you? Test it—is that balance or is it complacency?
