July 11Battles Lost

With music strong I come, with my cornets and my drums, / I play not marches for accepted victors only, I play marches for / conquered and slain persons. / / Have you heard that it was good to gain the day? / I also say it is good to fall, battles are lost in the same spirit / in which they are won.

Walt Whitman—Leaves of Grass (1855)

History will always label some as victors and some as losers; that's just the score-keeping system whether we're speaking of politicians, athletes, or, yes, entrepreneurs.

Your story likely has a long way to go before being measured as such, but you will encounter many on your way up or down engaged in the same heroic struggle as you. Comparing your success, your victories, or your failures serves no one.

Whitman provides a tender embrace to the defeated because the difference between what someone calls success or failure may hinge on the slightest whims of good fortune and fate.

Fully accept and embrace where you are now. Mind your own biscuits* and make decisions that will move you in the direction you want to go. (*Credit: Kacey Musgraves)
