March 29What Is Freedom, Then?

The shrine is vowed to freedom, but, my friend, / Freedom is but a means to gain an end. / Freedom should build the temple, but the shrine / Be consecrate to thought still more divine. / The human bliss which angel hopes foresaw/ Is liberty to comprehend the law. / Give, then, thy book a larger scope and frame, / Comprising means and end in Truth's great name.

Margaret Fuller—Life Without and Life Within (1859)

A lot of the appeal of running an entrepreneurial venture is that doing so affords you the freedom to earn far more than you would working for someone else.

But suppose material gain comes at the expense of others; this could mean those you boss around, but it might also mean your family. Does that really bring freedom? Freedom is, as Fuller states, “but a means to gain an end.”

So, what is that end?

British author Henry James wrote this in 1903 of freedom's end:

Live all you can; it's a mistake not to. It doesn't so much matter what you do in particular so long as you have your life. If you haven't had that what have you had? … What one loses one loses; make no mistake about that. Still, we have the illusion of freedom; therefore don't be without the memory of that illusion.

That should do for today!
