February 2Create Clods

What is done interests me more than what is thought and supposed. Every fact is impure, but every fact contains in it the juices of life. Every fact is a clod, from which may grow an amaranth or a palm.

Margaret Fuller—Summer on the Lakes (1844)

One way to interpret this meditation from Fuller is the “nose to the grindstone”—what is done is all that matters—point of view.

Or you might prescribe to the idea that science has shown the power of thought to manifest.

But surely both thought and action come into play when you are working on your masterpiece.

When you truly believe in your clod of a thought, you will be inspired to take action. It is only when fear makes your thought impure that you tend to act accordingly

In Bird by Bird, a book on the craft of writing by Anne Lamott, there's a chapter titled “Shitty First Drafts.” The idea is to stop editing your brilliant idea before you even get it down on paper or you just might never quit thinking and start doing.

Stop thinking so much and just create already.
