December 22Measure of a Life

I want to do something splendid … something heroic or wonderful that won't be forgotten after I'm dead. I don't know what, but I'm on the watch for it and mean to astonish you all someday.

Louisa May Alcott—Little Women (1868)

Entrepreneurs strike out for many different reasons. Perhaps, at first, it's to fill a gap that they've experienced while trying to solve their problems. Or maybe it's merely to take an idea and see how far and fast they can run with it. (Jo Marsh would have been an amazing entrepreneur.)

As we stick with it, pivot, scale, and evolve, we ultimately find that our entrepreneurial vision is the tool that allows us to make meaning and impact in the lives of others as equally as it enables us to make a living.

There are those who set out from the start to right an injustice, but most stumble upon greatness directly through the eventual execution of a solution that brings value to others.

Realization of this impact is how you measure a life. The point is that you get to decide what's heroic or wonderful. If you don't stop occasionally and accept just how great your impact has become already, you'll forever wonder what the point of all of this is.

Making just one person's life better today is, in itself, an astonishing feat.
