I use a couple of learning platforms, but I'm on O'Reilly more than anybody else. When you're there, you start learning. I'm never disappointed.I'm always learning. So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow—“The Building of the Ship” (1870)
Longfellow's poem “The Building of the Ship” describes in some detail the building and launching of a sailing ship. While for him the ship symbolized the formation of the Union of States, the metaphor rings true for the building of a business.
The shipbuilder in the poem is an old master who is teaching a young apprentice to build using “only what is sound and strong.”
He vows that the ship “should laugh at all disaster, and with wave and whirlwind wrestle!”
Are you starting to see the metaphor? What if we went into every step of our business with this approach? Would we take more care, use better materials, insist on our best work, apprentice those who would take on our craft?
It's harder this way—maybe it's even scary this way—but it matters to your heart. It's how you do your best work no matter what it is or how much prestige others attach to it.
