May 31Greater People

Within the limits of human education and agency, we may say great people exist that there may be greater people. The destiny of organized nature is improvement, and who can tell its limits? It is for humans to tame the chaos; on every side, whilst they live, to scatter the seeds of science and of song, that climate, corn, animals, men, and women may be milder, and the germs of love and benefit may be multiplied.

Ralph Waldo Emerson—Uses of Great Men (1849)

The greatest contribution of the entrepreneurial journey is that we often leave some little corner of this world a better place for having done what we've done. But that's not our obligation; it's a happy side effect of being who and what we were meant to be.

If you believe, as has been suggested throughout this book, that we are all connected by a universal force, then as Emerson suggests, that “to scatter the seeds of science and of song, that climate, corn, animals, men, and women may be milder, and the germs of love and benefit may be multiplied” is both awesome and doable on a global level.

Our job, then, is to look for our true self in relationship to everything in the universe.

No matter how trivially you view your current situation, this is the impact of which you're capable.

Challenge Question
