April 3Because You Must

The great person knew not that they were great. It took a century or two for that fact to appear. What they did, they did because they must; it was the most natural thing in the world, and grew out of the circumstances of moment.

Ralph Waldo Emerson—“Spiritual Laws” (1841)

The most difficult objective of all is to set out to succeed.

There's an element of timing to all success, and many of the factors that come into play are not under your control.

The circumstances of this moment will determine to some extent what people call success, and it's our desire to bend to what we think we should or should not do in order to succeed that creates a great deal of entrepreneurial tension.

You know in your heart what you must do; forget can't, won't, shouldn't—those are for other people's lives.

Doing what you must is expressing who you are.

Your work today is to explore what you most want or need to do and be on the lookout for overwhelming pangs of doubt. The fear that expresses itself as “that's ridiculous” is telling you that you just might have found your must.

When you proceed because you must, success will always be on your terms.
