October 23Your Creator

Character, reality, reminds you of nothing else; it takes place of the whole creation. A person must be so much that they must make all circumstances indifferent. Every true person is a cause, a country, and an age; requires infinite spaces and numbers and time fully to accomplish their design; and posterity seem to follow their steps as a train of clients.

Ralph Waldo Emerson—Self-Reliance (1841)

You are not a user, a vendor, a customer, a boss, a team member—you are your creator.

Emerson wrote that “[e] very true person is a cause, a country, and an age” because he contended that each of us is endowed with a soul and that alone makes each of us divine. (This of course freaked a lot of people out at the time as well.)

He taught in this sense that we are capable of self-reliance because we've been given the ability to trust our judgment. Conforming to the wishes of others was to sin against one's integrity.

Emerson's vivid message throughout Self-Reliance is that we live in integrity only when we pursue our unique destiny.

So, turns out you are already so much. Who knew?

Challenge Question

  1. What do you feel is the essence of your destiny? Are you living it?
