March 10A Beautiful Noise

I would not always reason. The straight path wearies us with its never-varying lines, and we grow melancholy. I would make reason my guide, but it should sometimes sit patiently by the wayside, while I traced the mazes of the pleasant wilderness around me. It should be my counselor, but not my tyrant. For the spirit needs impulses from a deeper source than reason.

William Cullen Bryant—“The Conjunction of Jupiter and Venus” (1854)

Perhaps you know a person who approaches decisions with a methodical weighing of pros and cons. Making decisions, particularly those with the perceived and unpredictable risk associated with the entrepreneurial journey, requires both emotion and reason.

And emotion springs only from passion.

What entrepreneurs do in the freest sense is make passionate noise—but what a beautiful noise it is!

The Jewish author, philosopher, Holocaust survivor, and Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel famously noted that the opposite of love was not hatred, but indifference.

Making decisions purely on reason is a form of indifference, and your business deserves the opposite.

Call it intuition, gut feeling, or merely a sense about what only you know to be true, and you will be able to make choices that are uncomfortable. Pay close attention to that feeling because it's probably love.

Challenge Question
