May 3Unsudden Heights

The heights by great persons reached and kept, / Were not attained by sudden flight, / But they, while their companions slept, / Were toiling upward in the night. / Standing on what too long we bore, / With shoulders bent and downcast eyes, / We may discern—unseen before— / A path to higher destinies.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow—“The Ladder of St. Augustine” (1847)

We are little more than a collection of habits, practiced daily. Some with thought, some as a matter of unconscious routine—some propel, some create enormous friction.

It is this collection of habits that most deserves our attention. What we do today and every other day that moves us to a higher place.

The journey to find the truth in your life can most effectively be measured in days well lived, well practiced. Each new day offers limitless promise and can be stacked upon the next and scaled for as long as it takes to be done. (And you're never done.)

Forget the goal, the destination, the plan. Live this day well and then start tomorrow, when it is here, with the very same intention.

Put everything you have into the unit of a day and collapse into bed with the assurance that you lived today, you bore what was asked of you, and that was enough.
