September 19Change Oftener

I am different from other people; my mind changes oftener. People who have no mind can easily be steadfast and firm, but when a person is loaded down to the guards with it, as I am, every heavy sea of foreboding or inclination, maybe of indolence, shifts the cargo.

Mark Twain—Mark Twain's Letters (1875)

The transcendentalists love advocating mind-changing. But why is that we need so much encouragement to accomplish this? Why do we hold steadfast and firm to our original positions?

Think back to the last time you went to a family gathering. You entered as a strong, successful, confident, and fearless warrior. Within five minutes you transitioned into your less assured, 12-year-old self. Feel even slightly familiar?

No matter how accomplished we are, we know that people judge us by our past acts, and so we live in fear of contradicting them. Even in the face of facts, we find it hard to shift our impression—particularly concerning ourselves.

Look, the people in your past made you the person you are and that's why you love them—but you're much more than that person today. It's time to let go of their fear and contradict the world with everything that's you. And do it oftener, too.

Challenge Question

  1. What's one thing that people in your past don't know about you anymore?
