何時使用
使用者中有許多人相當瞭解你的介面時。對他們來說，介面的認知需求比較低 —
（例如）不會在高度壓力下使用這個介面，所以，沒有必要讓所有的元素都很容易
辨認。
還有，這些使用者喜歡動手改造，他們相當重視個人風格，而且傾向把軟體設定成
符合自己喜好的樣子。
為何使用
當人們重新整理個人空間並加以客製化（不管是實體或虛擬空間）時，就會衍生出
對這個空間的擁有感。這是基本的人類需求（但也不會人人如此；大部分使用者還
是能滿足於軟體的「出廠設定」）。改變偏好的色彩和字型是很常見的自訂軟體環
境的方式，但是外觀與主題佈景的改變可不只是配色和字型而已。
在網際網路上的許多證據顯示，使用者喜歡設計主題。實際上，我們討論的是兩種
使用者：第一類下載並使用主題；第二類不只使用主題，還會設計。設計主題的這
一群認為設計是發揮創意的機會，而且能把自己的作品呈現在大眾面前；他們很多
人就是圖象藝術家，而且很可能相當瞭解你的 UI 設計。
不管是哪一種狀況，許多應用程式都具有外觀或主題，而使用者設計上傳的主題則
多不勝數。每位設計者投入這些作品的私人時間，正好證明了創意衝動的威力。對
於設計者而言，可變換外觀的應用程式，滿足了另一種基本的人類需求：創意。
