17. Early Childhood Development
Concept
Much of our adult behavior is based on the foundations laid early in childhood. Freud once noted that we spend out adult lives dealing with the residue of our childhoods. Most psychologists have concluded that one’s basic behavior patterns are established between the years of 0 to 6–10 years.
The first basis for our behavior is a gift we receive at birth—a set of genes. Genes are tangible packets of information passed on from generation to generation in our DNA. We live in a time unprecedented. We have mapped the human genome, some 40,000 genes, and are learning week by week what they all do and how they function.
