Octane (C8H18) is a saturated hydrocarbon with 66 electrons. There are a large number of molecules having the same chemical formula and only limited data are available. It has an electronic polarizability of 17.69 × 10−40 F m2 and an ionization potential of 9.80 eV, and it is nonpolar. There is only one study of total scattering cross sections in the 0.4–1000 eV energy range in the gas (Sueoka et al., 2005). Table 137.1 and Figure 137.1 show these data and also provide a comparison of total cross section in several saturated hydrocarbons from methane to C8H18.
