Freemium or premium only?
Some say that the only relevant traction is price traction. If your app is completely free the demand for your app can be infinite. However, that alone is not really important if there is no revenue. Asking money for your app right from the beginning is the ultimate way to measure traction. The earlier you generate revenue, the faster you validate the app concept. If you think this approach won't work, think again and have a look at the various crowdfunding sites on the net. Of course, you need to have an awesome story about your app. You need to tell them what is so great about your app, but you already have a great story, right?
