Lay a Solid Foundation
When people start off slowly at a new job, they quickly come to believe that this pace is both accepted and acceptable in the company. It is difficult later to try to get them motivated to perform at higher levels. The die is cast. The foundation is set. It is quite likely that the employee will still be performing at a lower level of activity months and years into the future.
