Define Excellent Performance
People need to know what constitutes excellent performance of a particular job. Before you approach the employee, ask yourself, “If this job were done excellently, what would the result look like? How would I describe an excellent job?”
When you assign a job, tell the person that if this job were done excellently, it would be done by a specific time, and it would achieve a certain level of quality.
Then, be sure to inspect what you expect. The more important the job assignment, the more important it is that you monitor and check on the progress of the job on a regular basis, even daily.
