So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Key Considerations in Mentoring
Mentoring, however, is not as simple as selecting junior people and giving them regular advice to help them in their careers. The first consideration is always that of compatibility or chemistry. For a mentor-mentee relationship to work, the two must be relaxed and comfortable with each other.
I have sought out mentors in the past, and at the first meeting realized that we were not a good fit. The other person and I did not get along comfortably. It was gradually clear to both of us that we wouldn’t have a good mentor-mentee relationship.
