old costs. Some people use the high cost of reconfiguration, a
consequence of the old sequential process design, as an argu-
ment to justify using the old process. But organizations that
fall prey to this circular argument are stuck in an obsolete box.
They will eventually restructure their making processes, ren-
dering them more iterative and artful, or they won’t. In the lat-
ter case they’ll find themselves at a profound disadvantage.
