To ensure compatibility when cabling between devices, a set of wiring standards need to be utilized. These are referred to as TIA-568A (see the following diagram) and TIA-568B (see the diagram that follows) and are used with an RJ-45 connector. An RJ-45 connector contains eight pins that bite into one of the wires inside the twisted pair cable. These pins are numbered from 1-8. By following these standards, you are ensuring that a transmitting pin on one device is connected to a receiving pin on the destination device:
