DNS records

We have already ascertained that DNS resolves an IP address from a given FQDN. To be able to do this, DNS needs to populated with the relevant information in the form of DNS records. A DNS server can obtain records in one of three main ways:

  • Manual entry
  • Dynamic entry
  • Zone transfer

With manual entry, a network administrator enters the details in themselves. This is useful when you don't want the record entry to be overwritten or when the device the IP address is linked to doesn't support updating DNS automatically.

As a word of caution, setting a manual entry is not the wisest decision if the endpoint doesn't have a static IP address since you will be continually updating the DNS every time it gets a new IP address.
