TCP is referred to as a connection-orientated protocol. What this means is that, before any data is transferred between devices, a connection needs to be established. By doing this, the sending device is positive that the recipient is ready to receive the data. To form this connection, TCP carries out a process known as a three-way handshake, which is depicted in the following diagram. The process is as follows:
