In our original example of www.packtpub.com, I mentioned that there was a missing element. This was the root domain. However, I included this when we broke down an FQDN. The root domain is represented by a period . at the end of the FQDN. The root domain generally refers to the 13 root domain servers on the internet. We tend not to add the . at the end when using an FQDN as the application/service usually assumes it is required and puts it in for us.
