It could be argued that the data-link layer is only relevant within your own subnet, and, while this is true to an extent, we still require it for transmission of data outside of our subnet. The data-link layer creates a logical connection between nodes on the subnet. If the data is destined for a device within the same subnet, the link will be to that device; if the data is destined for a device outside the subnet, the link will be to the default gateway. The protocol data unit on layer 2 is the frame.
