I use a couple of learning platforms, but I'm on O'Reilly more than anybody else. When you're there, you start learning. I'm never disappointed.I'm always learning. So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Stateful configuration using DHCPv6
DHCP is as relatively similar in IPv6 as it is in IPv4, although there is a precursor that takes place before any requests are sent to a DHCP server. That precursor is that the device waits until it hears a router advertisement message before contacting a DHCP server. We mentioned previously that these are sent out regularly, and part of the information that is included in the advertisement is details of any DHCP servers or relay agents in use. If no RA is heard after a period of time, the device sends out multicast transmission addresses to all the DCHP servers and relay agents. The process that follows is this:
- The host device sends a DHCP solicit message to the multicast address, FF02::1:2.
