Trivial FTP

While FTP runs over TCP, Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) runs over User Datagram Protocol (UDP) on port 69, which means it cannot guarantee delivery. While this may seem odd, one of the main reasons for not using TCP is to avoid the three-way handshake and acknowledgment process, thus reducing overhead on potentially low-bandwidth connections. Imagine that you want to reinstall an operating system en masse to a number of devices. Here, you would do the following:

  1. Stage the image to be deployed on a deployment server and set the server to transmit the image as a multicast transmission.
