File server

We have already discussed one method of accessing files across a network in the previous section about FTP. However, while FTP is of great benefit when communicating between devices with disparate operating systems, the requirement to use some form of FTP client as well as installing FTP server software doesn't always make this the best choice. Likewise, we could just make folders available across the network using shares. Again, this is not an ideal solution in larger organizations. A better alternative is to create a file server.
