I use a couple of learning platforms, but I'm on O'Reilly more than anybody else. When you're there, you start learning. I'm never disappointed.I'm always learning. So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Layer 3 – the network layer
We mentioned layer 3 of the OSI model when discussing routers and, conveniently enough, layer 3 switches. The network layer of the OSI model is responsible for the logical addressing of devices through the use of IP addresses. It is also responsible for route selection for the data being transmitted, that is, how it gets from Computer A to Computer B. The process of routing the data has already been discussed in great detail in Chapter 7, Routers and Routing – Beyond a Single Network.
In terms of protocols on the network layer, the most common are as follows:
- IP
- Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX)
