Whitelisting and blacklisting

A number of organizations will also use a proxy server in conjunction with either a whitelist or a blacklist to allow or deny traffic:

  • Whitelists: Only destinations/applications listed on the whitelist are permitted through the proxy. Anything not on the list is not permitted.
  • Blacklists: All destinations/applications are permitted through unless they are on the blacklist.

Whether your organization uses a whitelist or a blacklist will be dependent on the nature of the organization. For example, a school would likely use a whitelist so they have control over what the students are accessing; an insurance company may use a blacklist allowing staff to access anything on the internet with the exception of adult-themed ...
