Something important that I would like to clarify from the outset is that applications don't reside on the application layer of the OSI model. In reality, they sit above the OSI model. The application layer acts as an interface between the application and the network model. Any application that supports network communication will be developed using network application programming interfaces (APIs). The API contains code that tells the application how to talk to the application layer.
