A protocol that combines the capabilities of both distance vector protocols and link state protocols is known as a hybrid protocol. The main hybrid protocol to be aware of is the Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP). Originally a Cisco proprietary protocol, this routing protocol has since been converted to an open standard. Interestingly, Cisco tends to refer to this protocol as an advanced distance vector protocol rather than a hybrid protocol.
