It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

■ メールソフトを使わずに IMAP で受信する
POP におけるメール受信に続いて、IMAP でメールを受信する方法につい
ても考えます。IMAP も、SMTP や POP と同様にコマンドを入力して、メー
ルサーバーからメールを受信するプロトコルです。ただし、受信したときに
メールを削除するような使い方ではなく、メールサーバー側でメールを管理し、
メールソフトではそのコピーを表示する使い方が一般的です。
このため、特定のパソコンやスマートフォンでなくても、契約しているメー
ルサーバーに接続できる環境さえあれば、どこからでも同じメールを閲覧でき
ます。
IMAP によるやり取りを確認するために、SMTP や POP と同様に Telnet
を使いましょう。IMAP サーバーに接続するときは、次のように「telnet」に
続けて、IP アドレスとポート番号（143 番）を指定します。
$ telnet 192.168.1.2 143
