■ レジストリとレジストラ
構築したメールサーバーに対して、外部のメールソフトからメールを送信し、
配送されてくるようにするには、構築したメールサーバーとドメインを対応づ
ける必要があります。
つまり、メールアドレスのドメイン名の部分から、対応するメールサーバー
の IP アドレスを得られるように設定します。この設定は DNS でできること
を第 1 章で解説しました。
そして、DNS の情報は階層化と委任によって分散管理されていることを解
説しました。このとき、誰もが勝手にドメイン名を割り当てて使用できるわけ
ではありません。
世界中で使われている「.com」や「.net」、「.jp」などの TLD（トップレベ
ルドメイン）を管理する組織をレジストリといい、レジストリは TLD 内の全
ドメインに関する情報を保持しています。
新しいドメイン名を使用するには、レジストリに対して登録を申請し、審査
を通過し、レジストリが管理するデータベースに登録されることで、申請者が
そのドメイン名を使用できるようになります。レジストリは TLD ごとに存在
し、たとえば、「jp」という TLD を管理しているレジストリとして、株式会社
日本レジストリサービス（JPRS）があります。
