■ SMTP における認証の必要性
ここまでメールソフトを使わずに SMTP でメールを送信したり、POP や
IMAP でメールを受信したりする方法を解説しました。POP や IMAP では ID
とパスワードを入力してログインしましたが、SMTP でコマンドからメール
を送信するときにはログインは不要でした。
実際、SMTP はメールの送信だけでなく転送にも使われるプロトコルなの
で、ログインすることなく誰でもメールを送信できます。これは便利な反面、
悪意を持って大量にメールを送信しようとする人がいると、それを防ぐ方法が
ないことを意味します。
広告メールを送信する事業者にとっては、それほど費用をかけずに自由に
メールを送信できることから、受信者が希望しないメールが大量に送信される
ようになりました。これによりスパムメールがあふれたこともあり、メールの
送信元を認証するしくみが作られました。
インターネット上でメールの転送に使われている SMTP のプロトコルその
ものを変えるのは大変ですが、プロバイダなどを経由してインターネットに接
続している利用者がメールを送信するときに、スパムメールなどを送信するこ
とには制限をかけようという考え方です。
