■ サーバー側からクライアント側への通知
ロングポーリングを使って新しいメールが届いたことを通知する方法として、
IMAP には「IMAP IDLE」という拡張仕様が RFC 2177 で定義されています。
これは、新しいメールが到着したときやその他の更新がユーザーのメールボッ
クスで発生したときに、IMAP サーバーがクライアントに通知する機能です。
これを実現するために、メールソフトが IMAP サーバーへ接続し、「IDLE」
という IMAP コマンドをメールソフトが発行します。このコマンドによって、
受信操作が完了したあとも、メールソフトと IMAP サーバーとの間で接続を
維持し続け、新着メールがあるとメールサーバーからクライアントにリアルタ
イムで通知するしくみです。
つまり、IMAP IDLE を使用する場合、端末とメールサーバーは常に接続を
維持しており、メールサーバー側から定期的に通信が発生します。
具体的に、コマンドを使って試してみましょう。まずは telnet か curl を
使って接続します。
そして、ログインするために ID とパスワードを入力します。
ログインが完了すると、メールの一覧を表示します。
$ telnet 192.168.1.2 143
