身の回りにはたくさんの情報があふれかえっています。例えば、お店で
売られている商品の名前や値段、住所録に載っている名前や電話番号、ス
ケジュール帳の日付や予定など、少し周りを見渡すだけでも多くの数値や
テキスト、日時に囲まれて私たちは暮らしています。この1 つ 1 つの情報
のことをデータと呼んでいます（図1-1）。
1 つ 1 つのデータは、ある1 点の事実や資料、状態といったものを表し
ていますが、ケースによっては大量のデータがあったり、体裁がバラバラ
だったり、いろんな場所に散らばっていたりしているでしょう。このよう
な状態になっていると、データは不便で扱いづらいものになってしまいま
す。しかし、データをどこか1
します。このように複数のデータを集めて有
効に活用できるようにしたものがデータベースです（図1-2）。
ケーキ屋さんを例に考えてみましょう。商品1 つ 1 つの名前や値段がデ
ータです。これらは商品を購入するお客さんに伝えたり、売上を計算した
りするときに使う資料となります。もし経営している立場であれば、これ
らのデータはバラバラに使うわけではなく、表などで1 カ所にまとめてあ
ることでしょう。このように活用しやすいようにデータベースにしておく
ことで、後からどの商品がいくらなのかを素早く確認できます。 ...
