システム開発を行う際にはまず始めに要件定義という作業を行います。
要件定義を一言でいうならば、何か叶えたい要望があって、それをどのよ
うに実現するかをまとめる、要件の洗い出し作業です（図 5-6）。いきな
りシステムの開発を始めてしまうと、完成したシステムがイメージと違っ
ていたり、必要としていた機能が足りなかったりと、予期せぬトラブルを
生みがちです。要件定義を行っていくことで、
ことができます。
例えばメモ帳を使って手作業で行っていた売上集計を自動化させたいと
いうユーザーの要望があったとします。これを実現するために、POSレジ
を導入してバーコードで売れた商品を記録するのか、そこは手作業でコン
ピュータで入力するのか、そして集計は具体的にどのような計算方法にな
るのか、それは画面に表示するのか、毎日メールで送られてくるようにす
るのか、といったように、要望を叶える手段として具体的なシステム上で
の動作を決めていきます。
