Purpose/Objectives: If employee performance is to improve, performance
expectations must be carefully communicated to the
employee before the time for performance evaluation.
In this role-play exercise, participants practice
clarifying performance expectations in face-to-face
dialogues with each other. Participants work in groups
of three—as manager, employee, and observer.
Managers discuss performance expectations with
employees as the observers note use of the clarifying
skills. Small group follow-up discussions led by observers
allow participants to evaluate their skill use.
