Purpose/Objectives: Clear and effective verbal communication requires not
only good listening skills, but the ability to “send”
messages that get the desired response. Managers send
verbal messages for a wide variety of reasons—to offer
ideas, to answer questions, to delegate tasks, to
express a decision, and many more.
In this exercise, participants develop their “sending” or
expressing skills. They analyze sample statements made
by hypothetical managers in five different situations.
The task is to identify the best statement for each
situation, according to specific “expressing” criteria.
