Purpose/Objectives: The heart of leadership lies in the leader’s ability to
provide the various supports that people need in order
to perform well. Before they can provide the right com-
bination of support, however, leaders must first be able
to recognize specific needs and decide what support
will best meet those needs.
In this exercise, participants work individually and read
a series of situations describing employees needing sup-
port from their leader. By choosing the alternative that
describes the best match of leader actions to needs,
participants gain valuable experience in diagnosing
