Purpose/Objectives: Nonverbal signals convey more than 65 percent of the
meaning of every face-to-face interaction; words con-
vey only 35 percent. Supervisors and managers who
acknowledge this fact and carefully choose nonverbal
messages increase their communication effectiveness.
This exercise graphically demonstrates the three factors
in nonverbal communication: (1) learning what to
observe; (2) responding correctly to what you observed;
and (3) sending congruent messages (i.e., when nonver-
bal signals reinforce, rather than contradict, the mes-
