259 – Good Job—The Candy Game
Purpose/Objectives: This exercise graphically demonstrates the effects that
rewards and praise have on employee motivation or the
desire to continue to perform at an acceptable level. It
also brings out the differences that the same rewards
have on various individuals, depending on their values
and preferences.
Participants work in groups of four—one leader and
three employees—to complete a series of individual
paper and pencil tasks. Leaders reward each of the
three employees in different ways, using verbal praise
and/or different types of candy (such as M&Ms
®
or
Reese's Pieces
®
).
