The pattern

Open Source denotes that products are developed by a public community rather than a single company (HOW?). The source code is publicly accessible, so that anyone – a part-time tinkerer or full-time professional – can join the community and contribute his or her expertise. As a result, the solutions developed do not belong to a single company, but to the public as a whole. As such, Open Source products are freely available (WHAT?).
