Instead of answering the gatekeeper’s question, ask your own questions to get some additional information. Revert to the first gatekeeper script to get correct spelling of names, full titles, e-mail addresses, best times to catch the decision maker, and whether this is the person you should be calling or if there is someone else who might be better qualified and authorized to speak with you. At this point, don’t leave a voice mail. You’re not ready, and your approach letter hasn’t been sent.
