Many of these questions can be answered directly. For example, to determine whether our products have fewer defects after adopting Scrum, you could compare the number of customer-reported defects reported in the first 90 days after release to data collected on past, pre-Scrum projects. You might even normalize the data for number of lines of code, person-months invested in the project, or number of users. Sometimes, though, what we’re interested in is the more esoteric question: How agile are we?
