Reporting Structures

There is no one reporting structure that must be used to be successful with Scrum. I have seen functional, project-oriented, and matrixed organizations each be successful. A matrixed organization will be prone to more challenges, but that should not be surprising to an organization that has chosen that structure for its other benefits. So, although I won’t argue strongly in favor of a specific type of organizational structure, I will say that the organization should be as flat as possible. The more layers there are between team members and the top of the company, the more opportunities there are for dysfunctionality to creep in.
