Anytime you are using the right mouse button to select, you can use the Shift key to add additional items to the selection. This includes entire objects in Object Mode as well as vertices, edges, or faces when you are in Edit Mode. Let's look at vertices in a cylinder as an example. If I right-click on a vertex, it becomes the only active selection. It's highlighted in yellow and I have the usual axis arrows to reposition it. Next, if I hold down the Shift key and right-click on another vertex, instead of resetting the selection, that vertex is also highlighted with the first one:
